First Law of Thermodynamics Problem.?
An ideal gas is held in an insulated container at the temperature T. All the gas is initially in one-half of the container, with a partition separating the gas from the other half of the container, which is a vacuum. If the partition ruptures, and the gas expands to fill the entire container, what is its final temperature? As always, start with the first law and take note of which quantities are positive, zero, or negative.
Initial conditions:
P1, T1, V1
Final conditions:
P2, T2, V2
First Law of thermodynamics:
Q = ∆U + W
Because the container is insulated and there is no work done by the system, Q = 0, and W = 0.
Therefore internal energy remains constant, ∆U = 0, which means that U2 = U1.
For an ideal gas, the internal energy is exclusively a function of temperature. For a real gas, behavior may deviate. However, making the ideal gas assumption, U2 = U1 implies that T2 = T1.
Conclusion: the final temperature is T, just like the initial temperature.
This is precisely the reason why a throttling valve will not provide a low temperature in an air based refrigeration cycle, such as the Bell Coleman Cycle. A turbine expander is necessary in its place. The throttling valve works to drop temperature in the 2-phase vapor compression refrigeration cycle, because of cavitation occurring with the pressure drop.
From the ideal gas law, the final pressure is P2 = 1/2 * P1, and by given situation, V2 = 2*V1.
